Two tips about GMail (and poss. others):
1. Plus addressing
If your email address is "foo@gmail.com", you can use a "+" to create categories e.g. "foo+thing@gmai.com". This can be used for sorting and finding out who leaked your details.
2. Dot addressing
Many, many sites reject "+" in an email address because their devs are, well, stupid. You can get around that by putting a "." anywhere in the local part of the address e.g. "f.oo@gmail". Then just keep a note of what that variation was for.
