Communities where social codes keep people together. Individualism and the ability to just go wherever _you_ want might be beneficial for teenagers, but I think social cooperation - and instances which consist of a collective - might even be better to encourage.
Individual instances have its purposes, but since humans are not islands I don't think our instances should be either. Regardless of how many bridges you can build (because those bridges can just as easily be torn down, which may be destructive for cooperative relationships).

On _our_ instance, _we_ are the collective. _Together_ we create a _community_.
It does not have to be someone else's just because it isn't yours. It might as well be a cooperative where people work together. Machines are binary, people are human. -

I believe it should be possible, but not encouraged above all else (as your statement "we must encourage instances of one whenever possible" suggests). -

(which could be seen as an equivalence of moving as soon as something shows up that isn't desirable) -

(but at least archiving the data is very simple as you can just import it to a feed reader via Atom, which has 'next' links so you can easily traverse an account's entire feed).
