so i'm trying to figure out how one joins an existing mastodon instance from the existing profile- how does that all work?

There's a "Remote Follow" button. Click it, and in "Enter your username@domain ..." you enter melissasage@mastodon.social, click "Proceed to follow", click "Follow" -- boom, you're now receiving messages from that remote site. -

You have to create another account when you use different instances, as far as I know they don't follow over. You can remote follow, but that is about it... at least through GS. I'm not familiar with the changes on Mastodon.Hallå Kitteh repeated this. -

As for "look at witches.town", if that site doesn't have a public timeline for non-users to see (and Mastodon sites don't by default), you're pretty much screwed. You can hope that people on your site are following the interesting people, and then you'd be able to see them in the Federated timeline on your site. -

For those sites that do have public timelines and whole-network timelines for unauthorized users, you can catch their view of the fediverse there. You can even go to https://social.heldscal.la/clacke/all and see my personal view of the fediverse.
But unless somebody on the outside enumerates and follows all users at a particular Mastodon site, there is no way to observe what kind of discourse goes on there, without registering.
