@dolus @roka For science budgets? For putting people who know shit as department heads? For not looking like an idiot and/or asshole during state visits? Much worse.
@dolus @roka Yes. Trump won't continue that *and* roll back useful things the government actually does *and* misuse state resources and legislation for going after people he doesn't like?
Most sex education could be profitably replaced by "How to recognize and avoid the death grip of a sociopath" classes. @roka @mangeurdenuage @nepfag @dolus @dtluna
@mangeurdenuage @dolus said that we need someone like RMS. You know he could be filthy rich by now if he had sold out and made proprietary software back in his youth or that free software would never have taken off if the GPL v1 had a "no different opinions allowed!" clause.
... which actually has good points. I have been defending the need for math and logic to be a part of the CS curriculum, but the problem is that we conflate CS and programming.
There are tons of programmers out there that are self-taught, but if you want to learn programming at the university, you have to take Computer Science/Technology/Engineering or similar degrees.
Actually in Sweden you can study "systemvetenskap" ("systems science", but it seems the proper English term is "Information systems, social aspects"), which is more oriented toward software design and development as a craft and has only basic maths requirements. I don't know what kinds of vocational programming education is available in e.g. the US. I guess there's the bootcamps, which many people enjoy ridiculing, but I suppose there's probably some less-mathematical programming courses in community college too?
@clacke Yes, certainly. A lot of my community college courses had an applied focus. Some of the deeper math/logic/CS stuff was not available there at all.
@roka @dtluna @dolus @nepfag @mangeurdenuage There's a fine line here, though. I agree that it's possible to take inclusionism "too far" if it means considering any factual, technical critique a form of abuse.
But trolls and assholes really can drain the lifeblood out of a project, and if you can create an atmosphere where more people feel welcome, you really can grow your project more.
Linking for like the third time this week to the C4 specification and to the anecdote that supports the case for inclusionism -- people over code.
@dolus @mangeurdenuage Fair enough. I just happen to really like the guy, and I think Free Software+ doesn't necessarily have to be a drain on Free Software, depending on how it's handled.
Outreachy is it's own project with its own volunteers driving it, they're not forcing projects to join.
If you look at the Libreboot debacle, the FSF didn't cave and hire back the person they probably fired for good reasons. Sure, Leah got the project back, but that's because she had already scared away other contributors and the FSF didn't want to touch the project anymore.
@dtluna @nepfag @mangeurdenuage @dolus @roka @clacke the language is still mostly ok, even if I still dislike python3 (and the node-ish frenzy with which they keep adding crap; a language should move very slowly, otherwise we end up having to rewrite apps instead of building new stuff)
@pettter @nepfag @roka @mangeurdenuage @dtluna @clacke Linus is more Finnish than asshole though. He only seems to be an ass towards people who should know better, and greedy bastards like Nvidia
RE: the original point, I've seen multiple projects suffer because of a failure to act like decent people. Most famously FFmpeg and x264. When it's not interpersonal shit it tends to be sexism. Taking the troublesome element aside and talking to them tends to resolve many cases ("calling in" rather than calling out)
