Do you buy organic food? I don't, except when I do.

I buy some "organic" items to encourage continued production (your argument ignores economies of scale, which can affect price), but I think local vendor + locally-grown + ripened on the vine + bought fresh can give roughly the same benefits that you're seeking. When I'm home, I try to look for the latter more than the former.

@lnxw48a1 If by locally-grown and local vendors you mean local cultivars and biodiversity (of both plants and businesses :-) ), and seasonal fruits rather than greenhouse-grown with lots of energy input, I agree. But if you're talking about transport, the effect of transport on the final environmental bill of a piece of food is massively overrated.
If it's not better, why do you want to encourage continued production? If it's cultivar diversity, again, I agree. We need to learn to get away from monoculture.

@lnxw48a1 What I want is a label that means "this is not some feelgood mumbo-jumbo, these are ecologically sound goods according to scientific criteria". If that existed, I'd buy it every time. Sadly today, that label is "made in Sweden" and for goods not made here I'll have to guess that maybe USDA bananas are better than non-USDA bananas and maybe EU bio-labeled is better than not, for certain goods like e.g. grapes. And for other goods I'll have to know that label X is mostly bullshit.
The Demeter label is always bullshit. That's 1800s German shamanic farming.

@lnxw48a1 Economies of scale affecting the price is not an argument against price as an indicator. They are an example of more efficient production, and an example of why the price is a good indicator.
-
@lnxw48a1 Also, "organic" goods are absolutely mass-produced utilizing economies of scale. Mom and pop farmers often have trouble affording certification and/or certified practices.

USDA "organic" bananas taste awful. I greatly prefer the non-organic ones.
-
@lnxw48a1 The bananas over here taste the same regardless of the label, except the labeled ones are a bit smaller.

@clacke @lnxw48a1 Bananas are nigger food

I do (of course) mean to encourage more biodiversity, but the problems that long transportation distances introduce are more than just environmental. Because of shipping, we have large and centralized food-production/food-processing organizations (which naturally favor a small number of varieties for any product).
We have varieties selected for their ability to survive shipping, rather than flavor or nutrition.
We have basic decisions about content of the foods we consume being made in places far distant from us, by people who may have widely different criteria than us.

@popeyethecunt @lnxw48a1 Oh fuck off.
Also, don't take my bananas.

@clacke @lnxw48a1 @popeyethecunt Person takes another man's banana, better sleep with one eye open.

@lnxw48a1 All good points! I haven't heard them expressed explicitly before. Thank you.
