Either full instance URL namespaces (\!groupname@instance); or multi-hosted groups (\!group jointly hosted on instance1, instance2, instance3). I think instance URL is easier and requires fewest changes.
Current model is too fragile. Which \!coffee group? Which \!bananapudding group? What happens when instance1 goes down and \!bananapudding members try to recreate same-name group elsewhere?
@n2admin I like the idea of multi-hosted, federated groups. But it should be possible to combine that with fully-qualified group names; after all, if the groups are federated it doesn't matter which instance receives it first.
