https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule This has been a topic of occasional discussion here at the house. There’s a lot of different stories. If I can find the time, focus, and energy, I think it would be worthwhile to research ... finding the actual texts of state laws and their passage dates, plus transcripts of legislative debates.
As for me, my POV remains thus:
(1) You are a blend of all the ancestries that your ancestors held, but the past 6-8 generations should be more important than say 12-16 generations ago.
(2) Race / ethnic ancestry does not matter to me, because you and I did not get to choose our ancestries. What matters to me are the things you chose. Are you an a**hole? Well, that’s a choice, so that matters. Are you a racist or a [ethnic group] supremacist? Well, that’s a choice, so that matters. Are you unwilling to get to know people who have X ancestry group as a prominent part of their makeup? Well, that’s a choice, so that matters.

#One-drop_rule
Looking at the states that had this law, I was surprised to find #Nebraska ( #NE ) and #Indiana ( #IN ). #Missouri ( #MO ) was not a surprise, because they had been a slave state.
