My home server was knocked out AGAIN, this time by a problem with the power strip into which it was plugged. Thankfully, @Jodi Cooley https://hub.polari.us/jodi was right there to fix it this morning! THANKS!

SMU has formally moved to a "Residential Commons" system, grouping students together not by interest but merely by the name of a residential hall. This should create a more diverse community at SMU, better reflecting the diversity of the student body as a whole. @Jodi Cooley https://hub.polari.us/jodi is a Faculty Affiliate for the Morrison-McGinnis Commons (MoMac Commons). http://www.dallasnews.com/news/education/headlines/20140820-hustle-and-bustle-on-hilltop-as-smus-new-dorms-make-debut.ece

@neutrinoless @sparky A year ago, the original creator of Statusnet (which powers Chirp!) created a new social network protocol, Pump.io. I've been running a Pump.io instance called "The Hub" (https://hub.polari.us) since then. Besides the web client, there are now clients available for most mobile platforms (Android and iOS). In terms of ability to communicate, share images, privacy controls, etc. it is my favorite open, federated social network. If you would like accounts, let me know. I have to create them manually (registration is not open on the site), so let me know what usernames you want. I am using "steve" (https://hub.polari.us/steve) and jodi is "jodi" (https://hub.polari.us/jodi). Writing programs that speak to pump.io instances is fairly easy. I wrote a "botscript" that posts the current weather conditions in Allen (https://hub.polari.us/weather_allen_tx) and uses the "p" tool based on "PyPump," a Python library for talking to Pump.io instances.
