A before and after image showing the supernova detected on February 23, 1987. On the right is an image of part of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an arrow pointing to star Sanduleak-69 202. On the left is an exposure after the star went supernova. It is so bright that it overexposes the image, making it appear much larger than the surrounding stars.
