Series of optical images of Cassiopeia A from 1951 to 2011. The image is monochrome and tinted yellow. In 1951, on a field of stars, there is an irregular, faint ring, that is brightest a the top. As time progresses, the ring appears to expand slightly and grows brighter. A series of filaments emerge towards the center of the ring. The background stars also sharpen as time progresses — from a few fuzzy circles to numerous, focused points.

This is fun. Watch the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A expand and brighten over a period of 60 years.
This video was made from a series of photographic plates taken between 1951 and 1989 at the Palomar Observatory in California, plus ground-based images taken in 1996 and 1999 by the MDM Observatory, and Hubble observations from 2004 and 2011.
