I don't think it's about things getting out of control, it's more about the fact the overall context and scope of OSS projects changes over time.
Javascript went from a way to add a thin client-side interactive layer on webpages to be the de-facto VM running half* of the current client-side software.
The language and the runtime had to evolve to fit the new context.
Nix went from a PHD thesis to a full-blown Linux distribution getting some industrial and hobbyist traction in 20 years. The context also changed.
