The *better* story is why can't the largest bureau in the Treasury keep itself staffed? What will happen when our tax collectors just give up then resign en masse? One more government shutdown and the machinery of government might not restart. Why? If we hit the shutdown anticipated in October a rather large chunk of the IRS staff are going to run for the hills and *they won't come back*. There is no "Magic Money Tree" to pay for federal programs...
When diversity concerns like this come up, I find them frankly incredible. We're lucky anybody took any of the top jobs at the Treasury at all to fill in the blank spots in the order of succession. This bit of concern mongering from POLITICO is just a wee bit over wrought and misdirected: https://www.politico.com/story/2019/06/11/trump-treasury-department-diversity-mnuchin-1359089
This ignorant article overlooks that the departmental offices were depleted except for the Commissioners of Internal Revenue and the Fiscal Service plus a single extremely junior Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. If that Assistant Secretary had left the Order of Succession would've put the Commissioner in the SecTreas hot seat with no deputies. All the departmental offices posts have been seen as "radioactive" so they've been very difficult to fill with any human beings whatsoever. 1/
There are plenty of reasons why I want to resign my commission. I wonder how many colleagues would join me in doing so considering how many of us are considered “bible thumper” types in my post of duty.
@andyc@rpcutts Go with a flat income tax rate of a single fixed percentage. Utah came up with the firing squad innovation for the death penalty here that we might all end up adopting here if we cannot continue with lethal injection thanks to EU meddling in US affairs. If you see those things show up UK-side, either the Duchess of Sussex is meddling or there are US agents running amok.
@craigmaloney Okay. That’s the regular balance due notice. No changes IRS side as you’d have a different letter. Your return should show an amount owed on Line 22. If Line 18 (Total Payments) is larger than Line 15 (Total Tax) then you have a glitch. If not then you owe. If you had had an Estimated Tax discrepancy you’d have received a different notice. Most likely it is insufficient withholdings to cover tax due or reduction in credits you qualified for.
