The aurora as seen from my back yard in Chicago last night.
Significant light pollution but faintly visible to the eye. This is looking northwest, as opposed to looking east towards Lake Michigan.

@duriwak No. latitude is high enough for occasional activity, but phenomenal light pollution.
Absolutely wild that my mom is getting these in East Tennessee.
Meanwhile, my mom is getting pictures down in *East Tennessee*
Chicago! There’s aurora! Even through all the light pollution!
@freemo great resource, recommend it to students a lot, but here I’m looking for popular science for the lay reader.
@PhDMarie Yeah, Lab Girl went right onto the first list I made. I’m collecting titles for a friend’s store — I’ll add these others. Thanks!
@johncarlosbaez Not a hard rule, just trying to keep it manageable. I’ll add that, too. Thanks!
@johncarlosbaez Oh nice, I was hoping for some math that went a little beyond the typical pop fare. This looks great.
@michael_w_busch Any particular titles? (I have Katie and Chanda on there already)
Science friends! If you were stocking the science section of a book store, what popular (as opposed to academic) titles would you put on the shelves? What books, in your opinion, are absolute essentials?
(To keep things manageable, let's say from the last ten years.)
@grumpypizzaguy I grew up in Oak Ridge, but my dad’s family is from Johnson City
@grumpypizzaguy shared, thanks! Are you in Johnson City?
(I mean, any fundraisers, aid efforts, etc)
Let me know if you have links to similar fundraisers, and I’ll share them.
Also, if you’re in western NC, east TN, or any of the areas affected by the storm, let me know if you need something shared here or elsewhere.
This little rpg studio in Asheville popped up in one of my discords. All proceeds from everything they sell are going to local relief efforts. Send them a few GP if you can, and please share the link.
“October 2
We took a walk last night, acquiring mandrake root in a field far from here at the place of a killing by somebody else. The master wrapped it in silk and took it to his work space direct. I could hear him engage in good-natured banter with the Thing in the Circle. Jack has a long list of ingredients, and things must be done properly on schedule.”
“October 1
Made the circuits. The thing in the Circle changed shapes, finally making itself look like a lady dog of attractive person and very friendly disposition. But I was not fooled into breaking ”
“I am a watchdog. My name is Snuff. I live with my master Jack outside of London now. I like Soho very much at night with its smelly fogs and dark streets. It is silent then and we go for long walks. Jack is under a curse from long ago and must do much of his work at night to keep worse things from happening. I keep watch while he is about it. If someone comes, I howl.”
@Lily_and_frog None of it is AI, just using it in the colloquial sense (which I actually make a point of not doing, and should have here).
