On the Internet, all you get is 1) raw bytestreams, from 2) utterly untrusted and in fact known to be hostile and lying hosts, 3) written in evil languages, and 4) you want to do far more with this data than just demonstrate 'type compatibility'. Stripping it down to the packet and surrounding metadata level, for security analysis.

Strict abstract typing means implicit trust that another part of the program has computed data so you don't have to. That's a very rare luxury.

I guess a type is sort of 'information about information', of a fairly limited kind, such that it can be compiled away in the best case: ie 1) if two functions were compiled by the same language and 2) we trust the compiler/linker/runtime, and 3) they exchange data (probably as a RAM pointer), then 4) we can assume that 'the data types are compatible' for some definition of compatible including type equivalence / subtyping / field-based typing.

But across the Internet, we don't get 1, 2 or 3.

I finished the final chapter of TBP last night and omg it somehow got worse. 'Unfolding protons'. Downgrading it from 'Greg Egan' to 'Dan Brown Meets Doc E E Smith'. It's Lensmen level of hard SF.

I'm with the reviewer here who calls it 'Badly Written and Ill Conceived'.

I'm really, truly sorry. This would be an okay Very First Draft but it's is a very bad novel and I'm sad that it won a Nebula.

Near as I can figure, the CJK Decomposition Data (http://cjkdecomp.codeplex.com/) can help break a Chinese character into subcomponents , and CC-CEDICT ( https://cc-cedict.org/wiki/) can map a character to its (Mandarin) Pinyin sound.

Neither of these databases are 'official'

The link between conservatives and post-1989 Russia is no surprise to me because I was involved in the Evangelical church scene in the early 1990s, and I recall many of the deep underground leading lights in that scene - Rick Joyner and the 'Kansas City Prophets', for instance - talking very approvingly, very early on, about how Russia was more open to capital and church influence than America, and also how 'the Kingdom of Heaven is not a democracy' and that a future regime might be autocratic.
