I am looking at document databases. Has anyone used CouchDB enough to have an opinion of it? I have heard that I shouldn't use MongoDB but I don't know why other than it seems like it takes more to set up.

I would just be playing with small things so I don't want anything big.

I am probably just going with CouchDB.

@clacke no. Facebook could split their servers up into a million federated servers controlled by facebook that connect the same as mastodon servers where you could block them or whatever. It would change nothing. That doesn't do anything to address the problem.

So, for Dodo (this networking thing I am playing with), what license should I use? I think that the big options are MIT, BSD, (A)GPL or Apache2.

I tend to lean toward MIT because it is the simplest. I understand a lot of the complaints about GPL, but I don't like hidden server code so AGPL has that going for it, but then most servers are hopefully going to be single user so that part may not apply. I don't know if an exposed api endpoint means you have to give a way to get the source or not.

Ok, is it unreasonable to trust other people with your privacy? If you are willing to share something with 4 people are you willing to trust each of them to forward that on to the other 3 (and only the other 3?)

Or for private things do you want people to have to come directly to you to get them?

There are downsides having to do with server uptime associated with making them come directly to you that I may get into later.

@octopus @MightyPork @eris perhaps a more useful answer is that it is a joke religion that is based almost entirely around the idea of self determination and personal liberation.

One way to look at it is that it starts with "you're wrong, but then again everyone else is too, who cares" and then the implications of that are the rest. That way is obviously wrong.
