kat (boneidol@indy.im)'s status on Sunday, 17-Feb-2019 13:31:04 UTC kat @bob There were small mesh networks linking squats and social centres in London. Areas of Deptford had mesh networks. Southampton. Manchester. Sheffield. Alston Cybermoor. http://www.cybermoor.org/index.php/cybermoor-networks/background
There were different community models, CIC's, different reasons for wanting to build mesh networks, different communities ( example, people who can't get broadband in rural UK, communities of refugees in inner cities who can't afford ISP's)
The geek per sq. Km density changed. Broadband dropped in price, people's lives changed. -

It seemed to be a time where technology and local community activism aligned, where software protocols could mirror liberatory social politics... And it seemed a global phenomena. I was interviewed by Japanese research students who were travelling to visit different international community networks.
There was the "pico-peering agreement" http://www.picopeer.net/PPA-en.shtml
the consume.net manifesto http://dek.spc.org/julian/consume/consume.html
Metrics such as "geek activist per sq km" to measure resilience of networks

kat (boneidol@indy.im)'s status on Saturday, 16-Feb-2019 11:22:26 UTC kat #Sheffield is launching it's free wifi service. I remember talking about delivering this to people at the beginning of the century. Where communities would own their infrastructure and deliver it. Own their own data and manage how it is used.
Move forward 20 years and it's happening, except being delivered by a private company, and I worry about the survelliance. I guess that it's part of turning the city "smart".In conversation from indy.im permalink -

kat (boneidol@indy.im)'s status on Friday, 15-Feb-2019 11:34:23 UTC kat My colleague is hacking on an ancient perl script from the last century (AFAICT)
It's kind of funny to see them struggle. This stuff used to run the Internet.
However I am sure that the code people sling today will look equally crufty in a decade or so, and have much less change of runningIn conversation from indy.im permalink -

kat (boneidol@indy.im)'s status on Friday, 15-Feb-2019 09:02:01 UTC kat I haven't done part 2 yet, perhaps I will try tonight. ( and there is a proof of correctness of part I that I think should be added)
But learning about the problem shows it is an example of a "Voronoi diagram" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voronoi_diagram.
So that is something new and nice! #Math

kat (boneidol@indy.im)'s status on Friday, 15-Feb-2019 08:30:20 UTC kat Also, I was looking at the advent of code 2018 q6 part 1, last night, and couldn't do it..
I was like "oh no this is too hard for me, just give up." So I did.. then I had an inspiration and worked out a plan for it and it provided a solution. But then it was 2am... Oops
