The shape-shifting Maru OS is now available for the Nexus 5: Maru OS lets phones run both Android and Debian Linux, and now, months after being in private beta mode, all Nexus 5 users can put the operating system on their device. Their phone will run like a Linux desktop when it’s connected to an external display, mouse, and keyboard. It's very similar to the Continuum feature Microsoft introduced in Windows 10 for phones last year. That desktop state will still be preserved after the phone is disconnected from its keyboard and monitor. The Nexus will run like an Android device the rest of the time. While the OS is only available on the Nexus 5, Maru expects to come to other devices as people pick up on its open source. Don't take selfies with seals, NOAA says: It's Memorial Day weekend and the summer has officially kicked off — and it'll likely be scorching hot. If you're going to the beach to freshen up, there's something the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants you to know: don't take selfies with seals. The NOAA recently said in a press release that seal pupping season is underway in New England, but finding cute baby seals on the beach should not entice you to approach them and take a selfie. US nuclear force will phase out floppy disks next year: The Pentagon and other US agencies still rely on outdated technology to carry out important functions — including some nuclear operations — according to a new government report. The report, published by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), shows that a command and control unit tasked with coordinating "the operational functions of the nation's nuclear forces" still uses 8-inch floppy disks and runs on an IBM/Series 1 computer — a model that was first produced in 1976. Other agencies, including the Department of the Treasury and the Department of Veteran Affairs, reported using IT systems that are at least 50 years old. Why is there an iPhone in this 350-year-old painting?: When Tim Cook and StartUp Delta's Neelie Kroes presented a blurry photograph of this disturbing painting to a room full of journalists at Startup Fest Europe, Cook joked (?), "I always thought I knew when the iPhone was invented, but now I’m not so sure anymore." The Next Web reported this bizarre anecdote from the conference, noting that the odd-shaped block in the painting is actually described by the painter as "a letter." Okay, that's an iPhone, but sure. what makes tim cook so confident in the recorded events of history? Yes, the jet-powered hoverboard is real, and yes, the creator has crashed it: One of the most talked about things this week was a strange video of a man who appeared to have a real life jet-powered hoverboard. The video was published by Zapata Racing, which has made water-powered versions of these flying machines for a few years now. The difference is that those are always tethered to some kind of personal watercraft. This new "Flyboard Air," as CEO Franky Zapata calls it, is something totally different. The video went viral on Monday, and it polarized the internet. People thought it was either the coolest thing ever invented, or that it was a massive hoax. Porn site xHamster blocks North Carolina users to protest anti-LGBT law: North Carolina has faced widespread outrage after passing a law that requires transgender people to use public restrooms based on the genders listed on their birth certificates, while also prohibiting new anti-discrimination protections for the LGBT community from being passed. Old Kindles will be disconnected from the internet unless you update by Tuesday: That old Kindle sitting in your desk drawer is about to get locked out from the internet. Amazon is warning customers of older Kindle e-readers that they must update by Tuesday, March 22nd, or else they will no longer be able to access the Kindle Store or sync with the cloud. That means, most importantly, that you won't be able to download new books. The emergency update is for the original Kindle Paperwhite (2012) and every Kindle before it.
