@geniusmusing If they're just grabbing unencrypted data at rest, then they should have already been grabbing #Signal (and #Telegram, #WhatsApp, and any other program that encrypts end-to-end, stores encrypted, and then decrypts when the user unlocks the program) data assuming that the user was logged into the app when the cops seized the phone.
Of course, it could just be that the vendor is trying to spook users into switching to something less secure, where they really can grab their data.
I assume that Snowden knows quite a bit more than I do about this subject, but I really can't expect that he's been able to keep updated with the capabilities of Cellebrite and similar companies from his refuge in #Russia.
The biggest question on everyone's minds should be where is #USDOJ? They should have sued back when Facebook bought #WhatsApp and #Instagram ... or at the least, been actively involved in prosecuting this lawsuit. It really does seem like DOJ's beef with #Google is that the bribes ^W political contributions weren't large enough or didn't reach the right person.
My advice: dump WhatsApp today and start using Wire (https://wire.com/en/products/personal-secure-messenger/). Tell your friends and family to do the same. (It’s a simple, free download on all app stores. Easy to use, doesn’t require your phone number, and their business model is based on charging for commercial use and for pro accounts.)
Note to self: Remember to mention #Signal and #Wire and all the other #WhatsApp alternatives any time I toot about WhatsApp's relationship with #Facebook.
Otherwise the entire Fediverse will try to "help me" by promoting their favourite alternative... 😛
I wish #Briar were out of beta. It's the only one that is actually radically decentralized!
1. WhatsApp has a backdoor that can be used to decrypt your "end-to-end encrypted" texts. 2. People discover said backdoor (I guess through poking around or reverse engineering, since it's proprietary and code inspection isn't possible) and warn WhatsApp about it. 3. WhatsApp acknowledges existence of backdoor, says it's intentional ("it's not a bug, that's our design!") and they won't bother fixing it. 4. Millions of people continue using communications that can be actively intercepted, because they were told that some "encryption" thing they know nothing about would protect them.
The security flaw is not in Moxie's Axolotl protocol, but in the #WhatsApp implementation. Signal software doesn't have this flaw, it doesn't automatically re-key messages and just refuse to deliver. I doubt Moxie has control over the WhatsApp implementation.
Does this mean they will start filtering out private messages and start injecting sponsored content into #WhatsApp? -> "So we’d ask for some patience on this to do this correctly, and the game plan will be more similar to what we did in Facebook with News Feed."
Does anyone know an Android-/iOS App, that can seriously compete with the convenience of #WhatsApp? Just a 'plain messenger' that uses #email and puts them into a readable row like in a chat history? I only got to know »Hop« so far, but it seems hardly less 'gated' than whatsapp or facebook. The alternative should not require sign in, but support email and the possibility to set up discussion groups.
