Operate a #Synapse #Matrix server? It's time to #upgrade! https://matrix.org/blog/2020/11/23/synapse-disclosing-cve-2020-26890

Though I think they have a lot of stuff they already needed to solve. Trying to fix the #Matrix protocol itself and replace the #Synapse server with something more efficient, while porting features over from #Gitter (both the server and the client ends) is going to increase the strain on their development resources.
The recent migration from #Riot.im to #Element (on Android) is already dissatisfying, as the new client does not have all the capabilities of the old one and also introduced new bugs.
As a regular user of Matrix (who once considered hosting a homeserver), I see this mostly like Mozilla's Eudora mail client announcement several years back: "We already lack the needed resources for this project, so we're going to take on additional responsibilities".

Some of #Riot’s problems are baked into #Matrix as a whole. For example, addressing. Let’s say I set up #Synapse at matrix\.federati\.net. The “#members” room would be at #members:matrix.federati.net, correct? And my account would be @lnxw48a1:matrix.federati.net? I’m not even sure. Do their URLs start with “matrix:”? Or maybe “matrix://“?
And that’s the problem. They intentionally chose something so alien-looking that it confuses people.

@kaitatsu There shouldn't even be a main server. That's part of the problem. But, yes, #Synapse's resource consumption is unduly constraining the number of public #Matrix homeservers.

@xj9 #Riot is inconsistent, slow, constantly buggy. If they released a better replacement for #Synapse tomorrow, Riot would still constrain most #Matrix use to a certain subset of techpeeps.

@pskoskinski@mstdn.io @kaikatsu Yep. Some public homeservers have shut down over the amount of maintenance needed and the resource consumption. That's why I can't tell any specific person they should self-host #Synapse, but the #Matrix network does need more servers and to have the network's users dispersed more widely among those servers.
-
@kaikatsu The list I saw was pretty short. https://www.hello-matrix.net/public_servers.php
I think the best thing for the #Matrix network is for more people to #self-host. I’m not saying you or any specific person should do so, because even I don’t currently host #Synapse.

@moonman @clacke I liked #Mattermost in the very limited place I tried it out. It was just the lack of active users that caused me to close the account.
#Riot (or perhaps #Synapse; somewhere in the #Matrix ecosystem) is still too alpha to be recommendable. It is obvious that both of them are inspired by something else that I have not seen or used ( Possibly #Slack? ) which probably does all the same things.
"Use X; it is the same thing but slightly different" doesn't seem to work very well as a way of persuading people.

Hat wer einen #gnusocial Server und ein #matrix #synapse Server schon einmal auf der selben Maschine laufen lassen? Gibts Erfahrungen?
