@clacke I was here in 2009, so it was still early days, but apparently not as early as it felt. For example, the former Twitter employee who created some of the standards that Identica and StatusNet used (including at least one that Mastodon still uses) was unknown to me. I remember hearing about #Twitter plans to federate with #Identica, but I was not aware that they had sent at least one message across networks before deciding to go toward the walled garden model.
-
@clacke That reminds me that I have been planning to log back into #Identica just to see what things are like in #Pump.io land.

> Any news on what's happening with the #identica #XMPP posting service? Will it come back? status.net/wiki/Service_statusβ¦

One thing about this surge of people migrating from #Twitter to the #Fediverse is that people who gave up on #federated #socnets years ago and solely used #corpocentric platforms are now coming back.
Thus, I get announcements about people I knew from #Tent (thanks to fellow former Tentler @bthall) along with news about people from #Identi.ca and other #StatusNet and #Pump.io instances returning.
-
For the record, I liked #Jaiku and #Pownce and #Identi.ca better than I liked #Twitter, but #Plurk's weird horizontal zoomable timeline thing was weird.
-
I think it was December of 2007 when I joined #Twitter. I liked it so much that I joined a bunch of similar services, such as #Jaiku, #Pownce, and #Plurk. In 2009, someone on Twitter told me that as an open source person, I should try an open source Twitter clone, #Identi.ca. I did, and thirteen years later, I'm still active here.
-
It's important to keep in mind that GS survived the #bifurcation (when the largest instance #Identica switched to #Pump.io).
-
https://shitposter.club/objects/73ab2929-892e-43d0-834d-de7fbf2a16ad That's already happened at least twice. The first #bifurcation was when #Identi.ca became a pump instance, and the second was when Mastodon and Pleoma dropped OStatus support.
But I know he means maintaining different interpretations and extensions of the same protocol, not abandoning one protocol for another.

@tk More from that times about Laconica:
mcscx favorited something by lohang: @spaceman 1) I am not a programmer. When Laconica was launched I was already a free software user. I heard about Laconica during those epic Twitter downtimes in 2008. Lot of people were looking for alternatives. If I remember correctly, Laconica was first mentioned on Linux Outlaws podcast. They discussed the importance of having distributed and federated social network; and about avoiding single points of failures. Soon I became one of the early users of #Laconica ( #identica ) Laconica was later renamed as StatusNet. It then became GNUSocial as a result of the merging of StatusNet and Free Social projects.

@musicman Fuzzy memories, I'd guess. The person claimed to remember me from #Identica, but I don't know what I could have posted that gave them that impression.
I've always been pretty quiet about work because #EMPLOYER thinks that people will believe they endorse anything I post. (I think most people are not quite that foolish, but it only takes one person to confirm it in their eyes.)

I remember when Evan wanted to expand #identi.ca dents beyond 140 characters. What a firestorm that was! Grumbles about #scannability and about where to draw the line between blogging and microblogging.
-
It is also thanks to Evan that !ostatus hade a platform in #identica to strive on, which turned into StatusNet which is today !GNUsocial and was the network which #Mastodon could bootstrap off and to this day federates with.
-
@ariom some few GS users have moved to Mastodon, but mostly the Mastodon population are new users, many of them former #identica users
-
Found it. I joined #Identica on 2009-06-30, about a year after the site opened. I've had at least one account in the #fediverse ever since.
-
@lambadalambda This was also why #Identica was such a central part of the network while it was part of our network. Federation is the central advantage and disadvantage of our sites, so we need to make sure that everyone knows about it.
TL;DR: Promote the OStatus federation over $SITE or even $SOFTWARE and we'll all benefit.

@awl in that case there may be another reason, like RDN still remembering a now defunct !cycling group on #identica& trying toconnect to that

@x11r5 Do you use @steve's #NavierStokes to feed your #Identica / #Pump.IO personna its lines? Is this one of those "do more with less" things that all the #pollies fall for?
