@fu I don't know much about #Gitcoin, but I'm sure the anti #cryptocurrency crusaders throughout the #Fediverse and in other #FOSS contexts are going to try to roast #Tor over the hottest flames of hell.
#SciLab (which, like #Octave is a #FOSS implementation that is mostly compatible with #Matlab) has some tutorial walk-throughs on its site. I've gone through most of them, but never felt like I'd learned enough to do something from scratch.
I know that SciLab differs from Matlab more than Octave does, so when I tried to do some SL walkthroughs in Octave, it was unsurprising that they didn't work quite the same way.
@brianokken I wrote a blog post about Slack and communities that purport to like 'open' things... https://davelane.nz/notslack I know someone who used Slack for a 'startup bootcamp' during Covid lockdown. I offered to build him a #FOSS alternative pro bono, but he said "nope, everyone already knows how to use Slack." So I left him to it. A couple months later, he had to pay $10k to get access to their old posts for the final reports. Whoopsie. Choosing closed can be costly & embarrassing.
Please boost for reach. So, anyone that is working on FOSS projects like web apps, sites, Linux apps, desktop environments, or other user interfaces, please let me know if you want them tested for accessibility. I can do both CLI, web, and GUI testing, and app testing on Android. I'm running Debian (on a ChromeBook but that's not too important), so just give me the name of the package, or the URL of the site or app. I can also do Flatpak!
Just had a very weird conversation with someone discussing an open source voice assistant, I asked about its privacy and they blocked me. This isn't very reassuring.
Be really careful with voice assistants. As far as I know, all of them rely on sending your data to the manufacturer's server.
Open source alone won't protect you. Open source tells you what the software does, but if it does bad stuff you need to act on that information to protect yourself.
one thing I just realized about #github (not sure if this is true for other git platforms) is that, even if you are invited as a contributor to a project it doesn't list you as a contributor of the project
this is a problem as it assumes all contributors are developers. Some of us are artists, others are community managers, issue wranglers.. All of these people are active part of a project and contribute even if we are not the ones sending the pull request.
Check out the latest post on my website where I explain my switch over to Owncast. I have also done some work to update my profiles on several of my websites so hopefully people will know who I am and what I am about.
I realized I hardly ever add topical hashtags to posts which probably makes it tougher for folks around the fediverse to see things I write that they might be interested in. I'll try to do better with future posts about #weaving , #calculators , #addingmachines and #Linux#FOSS and #infosec topics.
I understand that many #foss projects have been locked in #github as a result of a choice made in the past.
However, it makes little sense to me to see new, interesting #foss projects to opt for #github while there are less unethical code hosting platforms out there.
