A #Backup story: I once administered a server for 16 independent offices, all backed up on the same tapes. A provincial law said that each office owned its own data, and when an office was replaced it could choose to destroy its data. That meant we had to destroy the backup tapes for all the offices when only one chose to destroy its data, leaving all the other offices vulnerable without backups. I was pricing the cost of a robot tape library so each office would have its own backup tape, but left that job before anything was purchased. I don't think my replacement ever followed up, so as far as I know they're still in the same predicament.

Temporary MarjoleinI have now written out a 15-step plan for setting up my 'syncing and dancing' backup system. Actually the hardest part is that it involves several not-really-linux systems like phone (Android), tablet (Android), NAS (ADM), Fritz!Box router (in Amsterdam), and (???) router (in Groningen). I suspect (but have not yet verified) that the Ziggo router in Groningen runs some type of Windows. The only real Linux machines will be my laptop, workstation (to be upgraded/replaced) and netbook. #networking #backup #SSH #dynamicDNS --- Now that all the steps are written out, I can just start and work myself through them. I hope I have studies enough by now that this will be easy(ish). :) --- Yes, I'll keep notes! (I always do when installing/configuring stuff - at least when it's for the first time.)
(ctd.) - Fine, so, I need to make a connection and mount that. Except, I've never done that from lappy Dennis, only from (currently defunct) Nikola. And I don't remember the magic formulae for that. - I *do* remember writing up notes about it (I even made a script), and I also remember I made a backup to Hal shortly before Nokila refused to boot or mount any USB3 device. So, I have to mount Hal... Ohno. Wait. - Ohyes, I can access Hal via its WebUI file manager and trace down my notes and scripts. I hope. - Now what was it I wanted to do??? #yakshaving #backup #cloud
Bedtime for me, it was a busy day. #tomorrow I should start installing stuff for the first part of my new #backup system. Good night !tzaf all !fediverse !tempfix
!gs experience: just tried to #backup my account (1), have a 3.5MB file, but last entry from 11 days ago only :-( let's see if I am more successful with the backupuser script. cc !gnusocial (1) https://fediverse.com/main/backupaccount
