guix manages to build ungoogled-chromium for GNU and that's hard enough, but for Android it's even trickier. Part of the problem is as usual to disentangle the Play Services dependencies.
For now it is, indeed, unobtainable.
To even almost-succeed you need over 4 GiB virtual memory for the linking, over 10 GiB disk space for the sources alone and over 30 GiB disk space for the build artifacts. If you are a bit starved for CPU or I/O you're looking at s 24+ hour build.
I'd argue that given their duopoly on mobile operating systems, the power to arbitrarily kick someone out is scary (regardless of how deserving Parler might be; I'm not even sure I've seen a screenshot of the site). I'd argue that this is evidence that the mobile OS and app store groups of both companies need to be split up, so that competition can come ... including strong competition for mobile app stores on each platform.
Again, Parler may deserve it, especially if their users used the socnet to organize their insurrection attempt. (Though I suspect many of them probably used odious #corpocentric sites like #Twitter or #Facebook, which are not being punished.)
Of course,it has other consequences, and honestly, if my phone was stolen, I'd want it to get a secure wipe. Search for "Brother Orange" in #DDG or #Google, and you'll see why.
#Android isn't the only one with such a misfeature. In organizations with #Apple #iOS devices, re-use after an employee leaves can be painful. Sometimes, after days or weeks of delay, Apple will inlock the devices for re-use, but sometimes, the org must buy a new phone.
I'll wait another week or two before I completely abandon it.
I should write up my experience with the #SSB network. I'd heard so much about this wonder of #DCO (disconnected operation) and #P2P (peer-to-peer) that I think my expectations were too high.
I'm looking through some XEPs, looking for one that specifies that all requests sent from non-roster JIDs can be rejected.
(Yes, I use Xabber, not #Conversations, as my #XMPP client on #Android. Every time I try to use Conversations, I have a very strong reaction and end up deleting it. I think the most recent time is permanent. I just can't stand it.)
@geniusmusing Yeah, it looks like #Android “LovelyDocs” was started, made it to the Google Play Store, then vanished.
https://blog.kapeli.com/goodbye-dash-for-ios in January, development of Dash for #iOS was discontinued. Wow. I know that iOS apps are a dumpster fire with all the platform changes, but that caught me off-guard.
I do agree with https://blog.kapeli.com/dash-for-ios-android-windows-or-linux in that the project would be a lot of work, and the person or people behind it would likely need to derive some or all of their income through the project somehow. (Patreon account?)
Copying a 'pub' invite and pasting it into the client is not easy. It took several tries on the Apple iPad, and was only possible by learning to trick the text selection function. On Android, there are some characters in the pub invite that can only be selected if you select all (grabs way more than what you want, leaving you to edit after pasting). I eventually resorted to copying the portion that selected easily, and manually entering the rest.
Each device / installation gets its own individual identity hash. In your profile, you can attach a friendly name, which is displayed to others instead of the full identity hash. Don't try restoring a hash from one device onto another, because the #Secure_Scuttlebutt network seems to deliver everything to the first device and leave the second one alone.
There seems to be a smallish set of users, many of whom are building SSB software, hosting pubs, and building similar #peer-to-peer ( #p2p ) networks.
I am nowhere near an expert with it, and I generally only open the client about once per week. It usually takes a while to update, so at first, the old posts from a week before are all you see.
I haven't seen anything else for iOS that supports GS, but it might be worth going to the big blue discount store (aka #Walmart ) and buying their $80 #Android device, so you can use #AndStatus instead. AndStatus is not known for being fast, but it can run circles around Shoyu, even running backwards, with its eyes closed and its ankles bound.
