In this discussion about Islamic State using Diaspora, I think something important has certainly been lost from the media-driven part of the discussion. The beauty of a federated open social network, especially Diaspora, is that in order to get somebody else's nonsense in your activity stream you must actively go and choose to follow them (or, follow someone who reshares their nonsense). There is no public firehose for Diaspora. So there is nothing, really, to complain about. In fact, I would argue that by choosing Diaspora instead of Pump.io, IS has managed to isolate themselves almost perfectly in the federated social sphere. Only people who support them will seek them out. The rest of us can just write about it. :-)
