@vegos I am well aware Psychiatry has a long history of human right violations…. just as the whole of medical history does.

That doesn’t mean I want a return to 19th Century medicine. The field of medicine is more art than science, but there is something in it just the same.

There was a time when “senility” was a broad term describing many ailments associated with old age. And yet medical research — most in the last 30 years — has shown this to be many different illnesses. Even though I am a lay person I see this reflected in the residents of the nursing home where I regularly visit a loved one. 100 years ago, the best we could do was warehouse people suffering these ailments. But the appropriate use of drugs made changes for the better. That doesn’t mean they can’t make it worse, but again, that doesn’t mean we should stop using medicine.

There was also a time when “psychopath” was a blanket term used to describe what we now know to be a spectrum of mental illnesses. A hundred years ago, the best we could do was warehouse people suffering these ailments in jails or madhouses. (Part 1 of 3)
