had a slight bout of panic: for some reason I suddenly could not remember my password for lappy Dennis - even though I'd been using the machine intensively for about 7 months; and for some reason I'd never entered it in my KeePass database, which had only the old, old VLocity password! O.O After a while... rescued by the fact that I choose my machine #passwords to have some (usually convoluted) relationship with the machine name. #phew!

@mk Full disk (or home directory) encryption I assume. Otherwise resetting passwords is a breeze :P

@mmn not yet - too little experience with that to try it out on a (for me) vital machine. I could use teh netbook for that, but right now I have other priorities.

@mk Then you can just boot (edit the option in grub on boot-up) the kernel with parameter 'init=/bin/bash' (or other shell), followed by 'mount -o remount,rw /' and 'passwd user' ;)
Keyrings (which are properly implemented) won't be reset of course, but you can login and continue using your bookmarks and access files normally without using a live USB stick.

@mmn thanks, that's good to know! :)

@kat I only remember my machine access passwords and *most* of my plastic money PINs - plus the one passphrase for my KeePass database for everything else (but I record those otehr passwords and PINs there as well, in case I need to look them up)
