@richlv@mcnees@weyoun6 I believe most people would consider sexual interest with 12-year olds as pedophilia. Typically, a 12-year old girl of that time would be pre-puberty and therefore be considered a child. (A 14-year may be post-puberty and that infatuation would technically not be considered pedophilia, but still objectionable even by the standards of the time.)
For all his scientific accomplishments, Erwin Schrödinger was a sexual predator who wrote in his journal about infatuations with girls as young as 12. He groomed a 14 year old; when she was 17 he got her pregnant then abandoned her.
He argued that his genius gave him the right to pursue young girls.
Saying "He was also a complex and controversial person who had unconventional views" is a weak cop out.
When he was 53 he set his sights on a *12 year old*. The girl's family had to have a priest intervene.
He tutored a girl named Ithi Junger. It's not clear when their sexual relationship began. It may have been when she was as young as 14. By his own admission he impregnated her when she was 17. He lost interest after that, and terminating the pregnancy left her sterile.
There's nothing wrong with having an interest in his scientific accomplishments; they're foundational. But don't valorize the guy and then sweep the dark stuff under the rug. Erwin Schrödinger was a great physicist, and an absolute monster.
@weyoun6@richlv@denki I don’t think they are defending anything, just trying to understand what language they should use for his behavior. Imo there aren’t any hairs to be split here, but it seems they are being clear that his behavior was wrong.
I fully support highlighting bad people and bad behaviour, but then it is even more important to be precise in criticism so that we don't dilute words or make criticism look weak.
@mcnees@weyoun6@denki Absolutely. He seems to have been quite a cunt even by the European standards back then, and much more so today. But labelling everybody with some word makes that word so dilluted that next time somebody hears such an accusation, they might go "uh, need to check detail as people have been misusing this word way too much".
Let's not be those "this is wrong, but it helps me make my point, so I don't care what's correct".
