   i'm knowledgeable (good) but mainly motivated by attention (bad). i don't get much done if nobody's looking.

   this is why being a full-time programmer worked so badly for me. nobody wants to see that.

   and this is probably why i came up with the idea of setting up an entire company inspired by the concept of pair programming.

   if you're a bit like me, and you don't get shit done unless somebody else cares, but do get a great deal done when they do, an entire company of people who pay attention to each other should be very productive.

     @thor It's the same as with adhering to exercise schedules and abstinence from alcohol and stuff like that, it helps to have a buddy, an individual, to make a commitment, spoken or not, to.
     
     That said, pairing makes me extremely exhausted, so there's a balance. If I would pair all office hours every day I would be a burnt-out wreck in a few weeks or less.

     @clacke the funny thing is i think it helped me to quit after just ONE person got mad at me for drinking. my new doctor, a person i had never met before, basically stripped me naked in 20 minutes. unlike every other person i'd met, which includes several doctors, he just flat out intervened.

     @clacke a former boss of mine is very quick to shoot down stuff like that. maybe a little too quick.

     i knew him before i worked there and talked to him after, sometimes. one time, he said about my various ideas that i was just trying to avoid work.

     reminds me of a candid remark one of his employees made. i was asking her what she does there, and she said "all the stuff that he thinks is boring".
